In a distillation plant, the slowest step is often not the distillation itself. It is loading and emptying the still. A basket loading system solves that. This photo shows one in a new plant, with the basket hanging from an electric hoist above the platform.
What you see in the photo
A red steel frame holds a platform and an overhead rail. On the rail runs a blue electric hoist with a large perforated basket. Below the platform stands the stainless steel still. Also, a condenser column and a Florentine separator stand on the right, and a plastic tank on the left stores water.
How the basket loading system works
- First, the team fills the basket with plant material on the ground.
- Then the hoist lifts the basket and moves it over the still.
- Next, it lowers the basket into the still and the run starts.
- After the run, the hoist lifts the spent material out in one move.
Benefits of a basket loading system
- Faster batches: loading and emptying take minutes instead of an hour.
- Safer work: nobody has to climb into a hot still.
- Even packing: the basket keeps the plant bed level, so the steam flows evenly.
Moreover, with two baskets you can fill the next one while the still runs. As a result, the still is almost never idle.
Design points
We size the basket to the still and the hoist to the full wet load. In addition, the platform height lets the operator close the lid safely. You can read more about the method on the steam distillation page.
In short, a basket loading system saves time and effort in every batch. See our essential oil distillation units for complete plants.
FAQ
Can I add a basket to an existing still? Often, yes. However, we first check the still size and the ceiling height.
Which plants suit a basket? Lavender, rosemary, thyme, mint and most leaves and herbs.
